Arriving in Gaza

by Leonard Rodgers 01-16-2009

090116-gaza-aidAs of Thursday, the Red Cross reported 900 Palestinians from Gaza killed, half of them civilians, over 3,400 severely wounded, and 28,000 displaced from their homes. The special medical supplies which I brought here from the U.S., augmented by blankets and powdered milk and other food bought locally in Cairo, all seemed a drop in the bucket compared to the dimension of need. But we had reached our target and we were elated.

Five hours drive east of Cairo, the little Egyptian town of Rafah sits on the border with Gaza, a Palestinian enclave sandwiched by man-made walls between Israel and Egypt. As I traveled I was reminded that Mary and Joseph had crossed the bleak Sinai from Palestine with baby Jesus to escape Herod’s murderous decree, without the benefit of the kind of modern vehicle we were in. I also remembered that our Lord and his family were familiar with the kind of hardships refugees face today.

On our way to Rafah we crossed the spectacular Peace Bridge over the Suez Canal. When we finally reached Rafah, after several check points where soldiers asked to see our ID, we reached a narrow buffer zone between Rafah and Gaza. After some strenuous convincing of border guards, we crossed from Egypt into the zone between Egypt and Gaza.

Spotter aircraft (pilotless drones) were flying overhead as we arrived. Soon after the spotter planes had done their aerial “research,” American F16 fighter aircraft, flown by Israelis, arrived dropping their 500-pound laser-guided bombs.

Our little ad-hoc team — Mustafa, Philip, and Rafaat, all Egyptians, Audrey from the States, and Pablo from Spain, along with me — had reached the no-man’s land when the first of the 500-pound bombs hit. Having delivered relief supplies during the 2006 war in Lebanon and again in Beirut during the 1982 invasion of Lebanon, I was once again staggered by the impact on the ground and air around us and by the fire and smoke that ensued. We were even more astonished to realize the bomb had not hit a target in Gaza, but had struck a target on land belonging to Egypt just outside the Gaza wall, only a matter of two or three football fields from where we were standing.

Few in America seem to notice the treaties and agreements Israel has transgressed; most only notice the rockets sent by Hamas into Israel, without observing that Israel has killed untold of men, women, and children in Gaza (non-military) — not only with bombs, but by withholding medical and food supplies and violating the same treaties they expect the people of Gaza to obey.

In the end I agree with my friend, Rabbi Ascherman, Executive Director of Rabbis for Human Rights in Israel, when he “calls upon Israel not to harm civilians either through firing on them or through the collective punishment of the ongoing closure severely limiting the amount of food, fuel and other basic goods entering Gaza. Rabbis for Human Rights calls upon Hamas to cease the intentional harming of civilians through firing on the residents of the Western Negev.”

Comment Code of Conduct

I will express myself with civility, courtesy, and respect for every member of the Sojourners online community, especially toward those with whom I disagree—even if I feel disrespected by them. (Romans 12:17-21)

I will express my disagreements with other community members' ideas without insulting, mocking, or slandering them personally. (Matthew 5:22)

I will not exaggerate others' beliefs nor make unfounded prejudicial assumptions based on labels, categories, or stereotypes. I will always extend the benefit of the doubt. (Ephesians 4:29)

I will hold others accountable by clicking "report" on comments that violate these principles, based not on what ideas are expressed but on how they're expressed. (2 Thessalonians 3:13-15)

I understand that comments reported as abusive are reviewed by Sojourners staff and are subject to removal. Repeat offenders will be blocked from making further comments. (Proverbs 18:7)

No, just 99% of the casualties behind one side of the border, the Palestinian side.

Could it be that 80% of those were innocent civilians?

Everybody Zionist/Israel kills or assassinates is a Hamas terrorist. Haven't you seen the evidence?

Oh, I get it, we should take the Zionist/Israelis at their word. No need for evidence.

Just like Bush, everybody held in Guantanamo was a terrorist.

Appears their is a cease fire , but missles were still being fired out of Gaza . No information if this just terrorists shooting or Hamas Terrorists .

Either way , lack of following up on these kinds of stories show a lack of compassion for all concerned . Many innocent people in war, not just behind one border.

A story on WorldNetDaily.com (May 13) was titled: "Roe Attorney: Use Abortion to 'Eliminate Poor' -- In Unearthed Letter Urged President-Elect Clinton to 'Reform' Country." Ron Weddington, who argued along with his wife, Sarah Weddington, in favor of Roe v. Wade in front of the Supreme Court, said in an unearthed letter to President-elect Bill Clinton: "I don't think you are going to go very far in reforming the country until we have a better educated, healthier, wealthier population.... Start immediately to eliminate the barely educated, unhealthy and poor segment of our country [through abortion].... There, I've said it. It's what we all know is true, but we only whisper it, because as liberals who believe in individual rights, we view any program which might treat the disadvantaged differently as discriminatory, mean-spirited and...well...so Republican." But Ron Weddington favors "persuasion rather than coercion." But what if persuasion doesn't work?

According to the story, "Weddington then argued that with 30 million abortions up to that point since Roe v. Wade was decided in 1973, America is a much better place."

In his postscript, Weddington said: "I was co-counsel in Roe v. Wade, have sired zero children and one fetus, the abortion of which was recently recounted by my ex-wife in her book, A Question of Choice (Grosset/Putnam, 1992). I had a vasectomy in 1969 and have never had one moment of regret." The story notes that "the Weddingtons divorced in 1974." Well, of course.

The primary reason to keep abortion legal is so the sexual revolution can go on and on. But there is a subtext that seldom comes into play: Get rid of the poor, a large proportion being blacks and Hispanics. Ron Weddington said it. Do certain liberals secretly believe in a "Master Race"?

Wow, worldwide protests against Zionist/Israel. Hundreds of thousands of people, if not millions, watching USA/Zionist/Israeli bombs destroy UN buildings and schools. Thousands of reports of USA/Zionist/Israel's bombs killing women and children. Thousands of people searching the internet trying to find out about USA/Zionist/Israel and the Palestinians.

Even Jews arguing about the morality of USA/Zionist/Israel's response.

Oh yea, this definitely accrues to USA/Zionist/Israel's benefit.

Hamas is probably thinking, 'Wow, maybe sending rockets into Israel was a bad idea.' Maybe they will think twice next time about doing such foolish things. I do have to give Israel credit for showing a remarkable amount of restraint. Considering it could crush Hamas like a pesky fly.
