Good News in Both Word and Deed

by Kevin Palau 03-05-2009

It’s a new world we’re living in. The troubles and hardships that were once easy to shove under our country’s red, white, and blue rug now fly up in our faces on a daily basis. It’s undeniable that these are very painful economic times. People are hurting, not just economically, but psychologically and spiritually.

Now, more than ever, people are hungry for the Good News of Jesus Christ. When it comes to evangelism, Dad has always said, “The message never changes. That’s sacred. But the methods? The methods will always change. We care too much about the lost to not try anything and everything to bring them to the knowledge of Jesus Christ.”

He’s right. And it’s why we’ve incorporated a Season of Service into the Palau model for festival evangelism. It debuted in 2008 in Portland, Oregon, and offers a new focus on sustainable, repeatable, culturally-relevant outreach opportunities. The idea is nothing revolutionary, but the results most certainly are.

Our purpose of the Season of Service is to:

• Bring churches together. (John 17:23)
• Connect them with local government agencies, mayors, service organizations, and corporations. (Romans 13:6)
• Raise awareness for the needs in a city, focusing on a handful of specific issues. (Matthew 25:40)
• Recruit thousands of volunteers to complete hundreds of service projects. (Galatians 5:14)
• Create a sustainable, long-term strategy (based around an existing system) to continue the work and partnership for years to come. (Hebrews 10:25)

Many churches are already serving their communities through service projects. But by building upon the unity, collaboration, and publicity that a Palau festival brings to a city, the Season of Service opens more opportunities for more partnerships, as well as a greater platform for being the hands and feet of Jesus Christ. Watch the video to learn more about it.

Big things continue happening in Portland. Check out the great article on our 2009 Season of Service launch on February 26. 350 pastors and our mayors came together to collaborate on how to best serve our city.

What’s exciting about the Season of Service is the sustainable community impact. We do it because of Jesus Christ whose name is clearly proclaimed at the festival, and whose love continues to be shown through service. Proclaiming the Good News in both word and deed is what it’s all about.

Comment Code of Conduct

I will express myself with civility, courtesy, and respect for every member of the Sojourners online community, especially toward those with whom I disagree—even if I feel disrespected by them. (Romans 12:17-21)

I will express my disagreements with other community members' ideas without insulting, mocking, or slandering them personally. (Matthew 5:22)

I will not exaggerate others' beliefs nor make unfounded prejudicial assumptions based on labels, categories, or stereotypes. I will always extend the benefit of the doubt. (Ephesians 4:29)

I will hold others accountable by clicking "report" on comments that violate these principles, based not on what ideas are expressed but on how they're expressed. (2 Thessalonians 3:13-15)

I understand that comments reported as abusive are reviewed by Sojourners staff and are subject to removal. Repeat offenders will be blocked from making further comments. (Proverbs 18:7)

  • I am happy to find this kind of pages on the Internet. As we need to have both the words and Deeds, Thanks for sharing.
  • In my opinion most of these are what we would call organic disorders. In a few cases there is the possibility of a functional disorder, as with the paralytic whose sins are forgiven, and the woman who is bent over and crippled by a spirit. But in most of the cases listed, with no natural or functional explanation available.

    Regards

Why the Name of Jesus matters, and Public Opinion still does not.

I have with some alarm, watched self-professed Christians giving aid to the
enemies of God, from who and whence they came, as it is written, “all have sinned”. I myself counted among that number, by God's mercy I have been changed in nature, and in family.

The Alarm stems from the knowledge that work of the brethren is in vain. Not that your are doing good deeds, but the doing of good, in a name other then, the Name of Jesus. Claims of expediency, or other justifications for the acts of mercy are made, but in the doing of such, contravene the will of God, made abundantly clear.

I give three witnesses against you. May the truth, of this matter be established.

    As it is written:
All Things do, in the name of our lord Jesus Christ. Col 3:17

We are not “seeking first, his kingdom”, if we are not raising the name of the King.

We are not “going forth to all nations, preaching the gospel and making disciples” in the name of the Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit, if we are going anonymously.
