Very thoughtful and provocative post. Thank you Mr. Bean. I will be looking for an opportunity to see the movie.

I have one small issue I find somewhat troubling, but have no clear resolution. My concern is with the word idolatry. I understand that there can be an extreme tension between law and justice, and that "law" has frequently been used as an instrument of brutality, murder and various degrees of injustice. For me though, idolatry is the wrong word to describe a misplaced trust or credulous reverence for law, because the word implies that God is the proper answer or corrective for this and there is really no way to replace a carefully balanced and crafted and even spiritually inspired system of law with God, who may be available to the humans who carry out the law, but who will not be making the decisions. I see no solution for this dilemma. The same Jesus that seems to me to offer the highest possible vision of God as truth and love and a beautiful vision of giving high status to the least in carrying out community judgement, and whose core vision of law is of healing, inclusion and mercy is to others who call themselves Christians a figure calling for a global high tech war against evil who is willing to raise up mighty empires to carry out his mysterious purposes. Of course there are many other visions of God and of divine justice and human justice.

I think your article is a proper antidote to this dilemma in calling for humility in the pursuit of justice and truth and my questions are perhaps overly semantic in their concern. It is the realities of injustice that an actual case like this one reveals, and that speaks loudest and most effectively . I pray the film is widely seen and considered with an open mind. Thank you again for doing the work you do.

I believe this is why we needed Barack Obama elected as our President and why so many people are having a hard time dealing with it; especially old white men who are used to getting their own way, not only in the South.

Does that apply to prosecutors and judges--or are you just talking about defense counsel?

i see lots of idolatry, including in my practice of law in the deep south, but i assure you none of it is the idolatry of law by its practitioners. those closest to it know intimately how flawed it is.
