Listen to it Loud

by Mark Brinkmoeller 06-12-2009

“Listen to it loud!” That was the advice that came with a disc of the new film, I Bring What I Love, about  Youssou N’Dour, a Senegalese singer who has worked for social justice in Africa. Youssou’s music pulsed with energy (and rocked my living room) from the start to the end credits. His personal faith and roots in the West African griot community provide soul, while his advocacy on behalf of human rights and the dignity of Africa generate urgency. Youssou has worked against malaria in Africa and at the U.S. Capitol, and has even made a quick appearance on stage at Live 8.

The film opens in New York City this Friday at the Paris theater (midtown), IFC Center (west village), and BAM Rose cinemas. It will play in cities across the U.S. as well. Click here for more details. Or see the trailer below, and don’t forget to listen to it loud.

Mark Brinkmoeller is the senior director of NGO Partnerships and Faith Relations at ONE.

Comment Code of Conduct

I will express myself with civility, courtesy, and respect for every member of the Sojourners online community, especially toward those with whom I disagree—even if I feel disrespected by them. (Romans 12:17-21)

I will express my disagreements with other community members' ideas without insulting, mocking, or slandering them personally. (Matthew 5:22)

I will not exaggerate others' beliefs nor make unfounded prejudicial assumptions based on labels, categories, or stereotypes. I will always extend the benefit of the doubt. (Ephesians 4:29)

I will hold others accountable by clicking "report" on comments that violate these principles, based not on what ideas are expressed but on how they're expressed. (2 Thessalonians 3:13-15)

I understand that comments reported as abusive are reviewed by Sojourners staff and are subject to removal. Repeat offenders will be blocked from making further comments. (Proverbs 18:7)

  • Looks excellent -- a must-buy. Many thanks for the recommendation.
