Comment Code of Conduct

I will express myself with civility, courtesy, and respect for every member of the Sojourners online community, especially toward those with whom I disagree—even if I feel disrespected by them. (Romans 12:17-21)

I will express my disagreements with other community members' ideas without insulting, mocking, or slandering them personally. (Matthew 5:22)

I will not exaggerate others' beliefs nor make unfounded prejudicial assumptions based on labels, categories, or stereotypes. I will always extend the benefit of the doubt. (Ephesians 4:29)

I will hold others accountable by clicking "report" on comments that violate these principles, based not on what ideas are expressed but on how they're expressed. (2 Thessalonians 3:13-15)

I understand that comments reported as abusive are reviewed by Sojourners staff and are subject to removal. Repeat offenders will be blocked from making further comments. (Proverbs 18:7)

I appreciate the research regarding Christianity and immigration views. I want to pass them on to my local state representative who needs to know that not only a few liberals believe in treating immigants with compassion.
Especially during hard economic times and periods of high immigrantion prejudice and discrimination rises creating further divisions among people.
There is a sterotype engaged in often by many of us who support tolerance of those who are not a part of mainstream culture, we have feared that devout religious conservatives use their religion to promote intolerance of those who are not like them. It was rewarding to see evidence that those who truly practice their religion indeed make good neighbors and citizens. If there is any accuracy in the sterotype it may be found in those who claim religious affliation in name only without any practice or knowedge of Jesus' teachings.
I have been exposed to individuals who choose hatred and use their interpretation of Christianity as a support for their beliefs; but I also realize that their violent reaction is part of a fear response to the growing number of families who teach tolerance thus changing their world as they know it.
