How is the US different?

Melissa may be safe in the US, but extraordinary rendition and holding prisoners without trial continues in the Obama administration. Torturers still go without investigation or legal consequences. The US continues to ignore human rights abuses by the thousands in countries under our sway and to only take a stand when the country is on our enemies list.

The story from Melissa Roxas just goes to show that, even for the most hard-headed of pragmatists, torture DOES NOT WORK. Nothing was gained through her unjust suffering, whether it be for her captors, or anyone else. There is good reason for professional interrogators to say that when an interrogation goes into torture, the interrogators are amateurs who don't know what they're doing. So not only is torture immoral, it is also ineffective, except perhaps as a tool to terrorize the populace.

Now if terrorizing the populace is what the regime is trying to do, then how's the regime's mentality any different from al Qaeda?
