Well, since it is apparent you barely recognized the "RCC" as a church entity (and implicitly, in your analysis regarding the Papacy, not as a Christian one), why shouldn't the US government treat the Roman Catholic Church as a political entity? Catholics have as much right to political participation in the US as the followers of Jerry Falwell or Jim Wallis expect for themselves.

Good article. Thanks for a well-balanced, thoughtful analysis of what this meeting means for both the pope and Obama. Similar approaches toward Obama, especially by the US bishops, would go a long way to influencing the administration on core issues of Catholic social teaching AND moral teaching. Thanks John.

The Pope is the head of the Catholic Church .

We send embasadors to countries in the Middle East who are Theocracies, we not only tell those countries what we think we should do , we invade them if they don't. . The fact of the matter is that most Americans want us to have an open dialogue with the Pope , regardless of our own personal faiths or no faith. in Christianity , He has much influence over the world , promotes peace and reconciliation , he stands up for those who have no one else to stand up for them , and because of the number of Roman Catholics that listen to what he says .

The United States Government almost treats the Roman Catholic Church like it is a Political entity. The USA even sends an ambassador to the Vatican.

"The Holy See?" In my opinion, there is no such thing.

When the RCC Papa (what Pope is the translation of) speaks, he claims to speak for every person who believes in Jesus and the RCC claim that their "Papa" is the Vicar of the Christ on the earth.

Well, Jesus never promised a man to be His vicarious representation on the earth to Believers; He promised us that the Holy Spirit would be his own vicarious representative.

The church denomination headquartered in the little country inside of the city of Rome should stay out of American Politics and not try to run the lives of law abiding American Citizens.
