New Momentum for Immigration Reform

by Justin Fung 11-17-2009

091116-immigrationLast week, Janet Napolitano delivered her first speech on immigration reform in her capacity as the Secretary of Homeland Security. While she denied that it marked the official beginning of the Obama Administration’s push for immigration reform — “it actually began months ago” — it is significant that up until this point, there had been a noticeable (and perhaps understandable, given the prominence of the health-care debate) dearth of comment from the White House.

Comprehensive immigration reform has, in the words of Secretary Napolitano, “been punted from year to year, from Congress to Congress, from administration to administration,” and the need for reform has not diminished in the slightest: immigrant families continue to be adversely affected by a dysfunctional immigration system, and employers willing to flout the law in order to hire cheap workers continue to undercut the labor market.

There are signs of hope: leaders in the law enforcement, business, and labor communities all recognize that comprehensive immigration reform is desperately needed in America; and people of faith on both sides of the political spectrum have stood up in support of humane immigration laws. But as we saw with the health-care debate, even a concerted recognition of the need for reform does not guarantee the necessary change.

As in the health-care debate, we are pushing not only for an end to unproductive and divisive rhetoric that exaggerates and distorts the facts, but also for real and comprehensive reform that emphasizes the value of every person — immigrant or otherwise – as made in the image of God and worthy of respect.

Tomorrow evening, we get to see another encouraging sign of the growing movement for comprehensive immigration reform: Rep. Luis Gutiérrez — who is spearheading the effort for reform on Capitol Hill — will be hosting a conference call, and will have a special message for people of faith who are engaged in this issue. Join with us in that conversation.

Comment Code of Conduct

I will express myself with civility, courtesy, and respect for every member of the Sojourners online community, especially toward those with whom I disagree—even if I feel disrespected by them. (Romans 12:17-21)

I will express my disagreements with other community members' ideas without insulting, mocking, or slandering them personally. (Matthew 5:22)

I will not exaggerate others' beliefs nor make unfounded prejudicial assumptions based on labels, categories, or stereotypes. I will always extend the benefit of the doubt. (Ephesians 4:29)

I will hold others accountable by clicking "report" on comments that violate these principles, based not on what ideas are expressed but on how they're expressed. (2 Thessalonians 3:13-15)

I understand that comments reported as abusive are reviewed by Sojourners staff and are subject to removal. Repeat offenders will be blocked from making further comments. (Proverbs 18:7)

I am looking forward to hearing Rep. Gutiérrez on the call. I think this speech from DHS Secretary is encouraging. I hope that the reform bill is fair in the sense that it gives similar opportunities that were given to my immigrant antecedents.
  • "unproductive and divisive rhetoric that exaggerates and distorts the facts" is, for most of those who support "reform", just a euphemism for "we need to shut up those who support our laws".

Meanwhile, perhaps one of these days religious leaders would like to tell us why they are in effect encouraging people to risk their lives in the desert. "Reform" wouldn't solve that: it would only make it worse by encouraging people to come here by any means necessary in order to take part in the then-current or future "reforms".

One of these days, I'm going to find someone who's good at questioning people to really press Wallis on that, and he's not going to end up looking very good at all.

The anti-amnesty folks seem to view this speech by Napolitano as a way of passing the buck to Congress. The number of times she puts the onus on Congress to do something about immigration reform in the speech -"When Congress is ready to act, we will be ready to support them," "This is why key members of Congress are taking steps toward legislation that will create an immigration system that works," "If we are truly going to fix a broken system, Congress will have to act," "we need Congress to create the legal foundation for bringing the millions of illegal immigrants in this country out of the shadows" etc - all point to the Administration wanting to keep the immigration reform groups happy but not actually wanting to push the issue too much because the White House's idea of reform isn't politically popular with most Americans. So when it doesn't happen the Administration can blame Congress. Ironically, I think immigration reform would have had its best chance with McCain as President and a Democrat Congress. McCain could have done it...in a kind of a “only Nixon could go to China ” way.

First of all, sorry that I have to write in English. (but please feel free to reply me in Danish I can read and understand Danish quite well).

I have some questions and I would like to ask for your suggestions. But before that I have to give some information, so you know what this is all about. I will keep it short, I promise.

About 2 years ago, I have a profile on an internet community/website. It’s a community between Thai people and Non Thai. (I’m Thai, btw). I was an active member on the community; I posted on forums and so on.

During that time, there was a man who appeared to be very smart. He and I exchanged some ideas and discussed about many things mostly on the forums. I never chatted with him, we never met but he and I exchanged some emails, nothing romantic going on. It was simply friendly talk. Until some time later I got tired of being on the internet, so I deleted my profile from the community (that was in 2007). One the same day as I deleted my profile, that person faked my profile. Pretended to be me, and contacted some of my friends at the community/website. I was pissed. I came back to the community/website with another profile, and that person got banned for life from the community/website.

After I posted about what happened with my profile on the website, I got to know that there was another woman on the community/website who has problem with that person. He has been harassing her for years.

Some months after (in late 2008), I got promote to be a moderator of the website. And I found out the guy had faked profiles more than 100 profiles on the website. After he knows that I was a moderator of the website. He keeps on faking profiles and time to time he contacts me, sending all kind of nasty messages.

About a month ago, he threatens me via a private message on the website. I reported him to the Danish police. I decided to send him an email, asking him to stop. He replied me that he doesn’t know anything about that. I know it was him but I didn’t want to get myself in a deep shit more than I already has. So, I sent him a message telling him that I don’t want to have anything to do with him. And I thought it’s over.

Then just yesterday, I have got a message from a blog company that I’m a member. (It’s paid blog) that someone post comment on my blog. I checked the comment, and I’m shocked. It was the guy, I believe, posting nasty message to me and he even faked to be Admin of the blog company. (I contacted the company, sending the message I got to them, they said no one from the company sent that message. Therefore, I’m sure that was HIM!!!).

I don’t want to copy what he has been written to me and post it here, because that will be like over 30000 words.

If you ask me, what does he want from me? I honestly don’t know. I did call him names on the website twice, the first time when I found out he nicked my profile (in 2007) , and the last time when he posted some nasty journal on the website (in 2007), the journal was related to me and my lady friend. Other than that, I never said any nasty words to him. I didn’t want to have anything to do with that person.

That person isn’t Danish. He lives somewhere in EU. He married to a Thai woman. (I’m also married. My husband is Danish). I told my husband about what happened but he doesn’t think it was a big deal. (Funny enough, my lady friend is also married and her husband said the same as my husband, it wasn’t a big deal).

You see, the problem is that guy has been harassing my friend and me for years, without any reason or any purpose (well, maybe for his own pleasure, I don’t know). And I won’t be surprise if my friend and I are not his only 2 victims. There must be some other women on the internet who have problem with him also. (I say this because I found he used women pictures on faked profiles on that website. And I won’t be surprise if my pictures will be on a dating website somewhere either.)

I was planning to ask some questions, but I forgot what I wanted to ask. So, I will just end it with thank you for reading this. I hope you understand what I was trying to say.

    Your suggestions/comments/advises are highly appreciated.

    Why they ar e here-

    We do not need them.
They are here because illuminati wants to destroy our peaceful scandinavian civilized and democratic christian countries - and make our countries stone-age countries , rued by barbaric illuminati new world order. They want to whole western world be like that...

if we criticize or try to defend our countries or areas, we have illuminati-masonic bullshit policeforces attacking us, throwing us to jails, and calling us racists.

True racists are our leaders destroying our white western countires.
