Psalm 109:8 — A Prayer to Destroy Obama?

by Diana Butler Bass 11-17-2009

During the last few days, Psalm 109:8, a Bible verse in the form of a “prayer for Obama,” has topped the Google trends chart:  “May his days be few; may another take his office.”  Evidently, a bumper sticker emblazoned with this verse has popped up in various parts of the country.  It is a sort of right-wing Christian equivalent to the old “01.20.09″ stickers looking forward to the end of the Bush era.

It was, most likely, intended as a joke.  But it isn’t really very funny.  Especially since the next verse reads, “May his children be orphans, and his wife a widow.”  The passage goes on the same way — asking God to pulverize this poor fellow — that he lose all his worldly goods, that his orphans be abandoned, that his father be remembered as a sinner, and finally, that “his memory be cut off from the earth.”

Thus, the “Prayer for Obama” does more than anticipate that he leaves office; it entreats God to destroy the president.

Psalm 109 belongs to a special category of the psalms known as “imprecatory” prayers — it is a lament in the form of petition to destroy one’s enemies.  It is the personal prayer of an individual, someone who has been dealt an injustice by another (usually more powerful) person.  The words of Psalm 109 are those of deep agony, the longings of a victim for retribution and justice.  This psalm is considered one of the most difficult of all the psalms — full of violent images of vengeance and death.   Many a biblical critic has struggled with its words, and not a few — including Roman Catholic and mainline Protestant theologians — recommend it not be used in public worship, much less as a bumper-sticker political slogan.

In his marvelous book, Reflections on the Psalms, C.S. Lewis observed:

In some of the Psalms the spirit of hatred which strikes us in the face is like the heat from a furnace mouth.  In others the same spirit ceases to be frightful only by becoming (to a modern mind) almost comic in its naivety.  Examples can be found all over the Psalter, but perhaps the worst is in 109 (p. 20).

Lewis suspects that it may be best to leave such psalms alone.  But then he says that we must face “facts squarely.”

The hatred is there — festering, gloating, undisguised — and also we should be wicked if we in any way condoned or approved it, or (worse still) used it to justify similar passions in ourselves (p. 22).

Lewis refers to these psalms as horrible, devilish, cruel, hateful, and evil.  He believes that Psalm 109 — and the poetry of its kind in the psalter — should point us back to the evil we carry within and teach us each how to behave with goodness, humility, and love.

According to the venerable C.S. Lewis, then, a “Prayer for Obama” is really a prayer for ourselves to go beyond “festering, gloating, undisguised” hatred.  ”If the Divine does not call to make us better, it will make us very much worse,” he reminded his readers.  “Of all bad men, religious bad men are the worst.”

Recessions/Depressions are a polite way of stating God's judgment for the sin of war. The panic of 1880 was caused by the reverbatation of the Civil War, the Great Depression (a worldwide event btw) was preceded by the Great War, the recessions of 1950-date are a consequence of WW@, Korea, Vietnam right up to Iraq- a military operation costing trillions of borrowed dollars while the Bush administration gave rebates, refunds and lower tax rates- all while encouraging increased expansion of a retail based economy with it's ensuing low-wage jobs. It's not to hard to see the judgment.

Just a reminder: President Bush's solution to the terrorist attacks was to encourage the nation to "go shopping"

Read all of Ps 109, especially 16-19. The psalm is outrageously, vengefully angry--psalms include the full range of human emotion--but the target of the anger is one who "persecuted the poor and needy man" and "clothed himself with cursing as with his garment." The psalmist wants the curses to come home. "As he clothed himself with cursing like a garment, so let it enter his body like water, and like oil into his bones."

Lewis that the anger in this psalm was so over the top that it became comic--it might help us to laugh at our own desire to play tit-for-tat. I can't laugh at it; it's too real in this world.

This psalm may help us to understand the bitterness that keeps the cycle of vengeance turning. Perhaps we can even identify a seed of that bitterness in our own hearts, and pray that it will be uprooted and replaced with the balm of forgiveness and unconditional love.

Better to bless those who curse us.

I am not frustrated with your fragments or how you should write. But I
believe if you want others to read your messages, they should be appropriate
to read in what this nation official language is.
    That's all!

I enjoy reading peoples comments on Psalms 109: 8, but what type of
    English are you writing.
Such as the words you've given: phraud-fraud,phailure-failure,phor-for.
The (ph) in any form of a word supposed to be pronounced as though it was the
al(ph)abet (F) as in fight. That's the way the
English pronunciations are here in America.

  • Republicans are fed up with RINO's and Democrats... well, I some of them are fed up with each other, too. I believe this is partly why Palin has caused such excitement among many people. She's different. She's not the typical politician on a power-trip. She is willing to disagree with her party.

Correction -- Palin is on the ultimate power trip. Oh, and "Republican" is a political party, not an ideology -- remember that the conservatives began taking over the GOP in the 1960s.

As I aforementioned in other earlier talks, skin color does play a
gigantic role here in America and you don't have to go to college to find a career
in it because it is right out there in the openings to
be viewed. In regards to people that does not endure changes or something
new, they are the most ones with the wealth feeling or thinking that change
is going to affect their lifestyles or their
powers that once was for them only.

bitter people are the ones who just don't like anything new or different

allot of people really thought they were fighting some kind of holy war and
when it all came crashing down they went into berserker mode. This is
exactly what the Bible warns us about. It clearly instructs us not to play God.
Render unto Caesar what is Caesar's. Jesus did not attempt to throw of the
Romans nor did he spend much time talking about the grip they had on the
whole civilized world in His time. We are to be in this world not of it.

  • Whether or not you can "accept" what I've said is your decision, but it does not negate what is true. Saying that Obama has socialistic leanings isn't a slur when he indeed does have socialistic leanings.

Well, using "socialistic" in this context is a slur no matter how you want to justify it. Shame on you for continuing to say it.

And I think the electorate is more sophisticated than you believe. Since conservatives almost never talk or listen to anyone outside its own circles, the movement has no real understanding of how everyone else thinks and acts. That's why they blamed GWB and GOP "rogues" for electoral failure in 2006 and 2008, never mind that folks were actually rejecting not only the conservative agenda but also their candidates -- for reasons I have already mentioned.

And this is why Palin has zero chance of being elected. As I said, she has no electable program (bashing the other guys just isn't going to do it today) and is seeking power based solely on her personality. Plus, the conservatives are still trying to channel Ronald Reagan after all these years, not understanding that he's dead and gone (figuratively as well).

And here's a prediction: By 2012 things will be going so incredibly well that Obama might win by a bigger landslide than last year. And that will foment some serious division within the Republican Party because conservatism will be exposed as the fraud it always has been.

Why Yes. Hate is wrong and by no means it should be done away with.
    Apparently it will not Beth.
Why! My (ITS) Ideas, Thoughts and Suggestions tells me that hate is
nothing more than dislikes, jealousness and a possibility of Skin Color. I have
no other alternates to believe anything else.

I read a blog the other day and I really liked what the person said. They said God is the producter and we are the directors of our lives. God doesn't come down and sweep us up into his arms everytime we skin our knees. I think all Christians should know by now that hate is always wrong. Hating Bush or Obama goes against what Jesus has taught us. God does expect us to act like grown ups and not lay on the floor kicking our legs when we can't have our way. I seem to hear allot of kicking and crying going on right now and its very sad to think that the people doing it claim to follow God's word.

I assume that is your actual age. If I'm correct then I'm nearly
3 times your age. I know more about this country than you will ever know. I have lived it all. Some good, some bad, death threats. But I still remain alive to continue to survive to see

And we got the right person who's will is to help everyone.

I always focus on my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. But there is a
blogger that is putting the Word of God into politics. Everything I speak of the WORD, there something in the blog about politics. But I truly believe though that GOD made this Black America man President for His sakes. By God working through human vessels, you
and I know that the Devil's always going to have somebody to work his will which is to kill, steal and to destroy because Death and Life are in the power of the tongue. For those who love it shall eat its
    fruit thereof.

Obama's approval rating is under 50% now. People are groaning, and I see
no rejoicing going on anywhere. There was great rejoicing when he was
elected, but he was not "in authority" then. Now that he is "in authority,"
there is little rejoicing at all.

How can you sit back and say there has been intensified divisions because
of Obama. It always had been divided. If the Republicans had enough horse
sense, maybe we'll have a stable government. If they cared about Healthcare,
then why didn't they act upon it when they had both
houses 8 years ago. Can you tell me that? I'm viewing dodges and
    smokescreens now.
