Video: An Interview with Michael Sandel on Civil Dialogue in the Struggle for Justice

by Jim Wallis 11-18-2009

A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to sit down with Michael Sandel, Harvard Professor and author of the new book Justice: What’s the Right Thing to Do? In this book he tackles some of the most pressing ethical issues of our day and at the same time teaches how we can engage these issues with a productive moral dialogue, even with those with whom we disagree.  I am always impressed with Michael’s ability to understand and explain many different approaches to difficult moral questions, and with Socratic wisdom bring his students and his readers through them.  Every year his class on justice attracts more than 1,000 students.  If it is ever appropriate to classify a professor as a “rock star,” Michael Sandel just might be the Bono of the lecture hall.

Comment Code of Conduct

I will express myself with civility, courtesy, and respect for every member of the Sojourners online community, especially toward those with whom I disagree—even if I feel disrespected by them. (Romans 12:17-21)

I will express my disagreements with other community members' ideas without insulting, mocking, or slandering them personally. (Matthew 5:22)

I will not exaggerate others' beliefs nor make unfounded prejudicial assumptions based on labels, categories, or stereotypes. I will always extend the benefit of the doubt. (Ephesians 4:29)

I will hold others accountable by clicking "report" on comments that violate these principles, based not on what ideas are expressed but on how they're expressed. (2 Thessalonians 3:13-15)

I understand that comments reported as abusive are reviewed by Sojourners staff and are subject to removal. Repeat offenders will be blocked from making further comments. (Proverbs 18:7)

    Dear Rev. Wallis:

I found it very difficult to listen to your interview with Prof. Sandel for technical reasons: a) your mike is way too close to you and too far from him, making you always sound too loud or him too quiet.
    b) correspondingly your verbal nods or Rogersian "yes--yes" were very distracting and defeated concentration on the message of the interviewee.

I suggest someone editing the videos for sound quality before you post them and
just let the other talk once you've asked the question. Let us do the "yes-yes" if we feel so inclined.
