‘Breaking Bread and Barriers’: Storytelling Connects Personal Immigration Experiences with Scripture

by Allison Johnson 11-24-2009

Here’s a glimpse into what’s happening around the country on immigration reform:

I’ve been working with a group of pastors in Decorah, Iowa, to host a “Breaking Bread and Barriers” event in their community. The concept is a potluck dinner with storytelling and sharing about immigration in their community, past and present. An immigrant who was an employee of the plant in Postville, Iowa, a college student, an Asian immigrant business owner, a Norwegian American, and Rev. David Vasquez each shared stories and how their experiences connected with an immigrant story in scripture. They got some media attention around the event as well, and had a state representative and a rep. from Sen. Tom Harkin’s staff attend the event. It was quite a success!

Here’s a video clip from the local news.

Here’s a local newspaper article: “Town Meeting Convenes in Support of Immigration Reform”

And some photos on Facebook from the “Breaking Bread and Barriers” event.

Comment Code of Conduct

I will express myself with civility, courtesy, and respect for every member of the Sojourners online community, especially toward those with whom I disagree—even if I feel disrespected by them. (Romans 12:17-21)

I will express my disagreements with other community members' ideas without insulting, mocking, or slandering them personally. (Matthew 5:22)

I will not exaggerate others' beliefs nor make unfounded prejudicial assumptions based on labels, categories, or stereotypes. I will always extend the benefit of the doubt. (Ephesians 4:29)

I will hold others accountable by clicking "report" on comments that violate these principles, based not on what ideas are expressed but on how they're expressed. (2 Thessalonians 3:13-15)

I understand that comments reported as abusive are reviewed by Sojourners staff and are subject to removal. Repeat offenders will be blocked from making further comments. (Proverbs 18:7)
