Perseverance with Vision in Zimbabwe

by Nontando Hadebe 11-26-2009

By persevering the egg walks on legs.
(Ethiopian Proverb)

Perseverance through an unpredictable and often perilous political process is “cracking the shell” of power that was once thought invincible. This week, after missing the deadline set by regional leaders, the three main political parties resumed talks aimed at dealing with non-compliance to the unity agreement signed by all parties. The “watchful eye” of regional leaders seems to be having some effect!  Also noteworthy is the awarding of the prestigious Human Rights Award by President Obama to women’s human rights group WOZA. Their recognition will no doubt renew the efforts of many others who contribute in their different ways as individuals, news reporters, political activists, church groups, citizens, and exiles.  BBC and CNN have also been allowed in. Perseverance with vision is key. Keep persevering with us! And also please pray for a good rainy season.

In South Africa, the news has been dominated by the government’s “war” against crime and the “shoot to kill” strategy against dangerous armed criminals. While there is an urgent need to curb crime, there is some debate on the strategy as innocent people have lost their lives — including a 3-year-old. The debate continues.

It’s not all depressing! Preparation for soccer’s World Cup is progressing well, and the excitement is mounting despite the poor performance of the national team. We are hopeful that they will keep improving! Hope that some of you will come to the tournament — let me know through Sojourners if I can be of assistance to you. I am available to help from 25th January 2010!

Comment Code of Conduct

I will express myself with civility, courtesy, and respect for every member of the Sojourners online community, especially toward those with whom I disagree—even if I feel disrespected by them. (Romans 12:17-21)

I will express my disagreements with other community members' ideas without insulting, mocking, or slandering them personally. (Matthew 5:22)

I will not exaggerate others' beliefs nor make unfounded prejudicial assumptions based on labels, categories, or stereotypes. I will always extend the benefit of the doubt. (Ephesians 4:29)

I will hold others accountable by clicking "report" on comments that violate these principles, based not on what ideas are expressed but on how they're expressed. (2 Thessalonians 3:13-15)

I understand that comments reported as abusive are reviewed by Sojourners staff and are subject to removal. Repeat offenders will be blocked from making further comments. (Proverbs 18:7)
