India's 9/11

Many in India and across the world saw last week's hostage situation as India's 9/11. Already this comparison is being debated, but it seems increasingly clear that the terrorist actions of last week could help define the way this rapidly growing country interacts with the world. The history of conflict between India and Pakistan and the rise in tension between the two countries gives cause for great concern.

As I have watched the news unfold, I have been reminded of the statement that Sojourners released and over 5,000 religious leaders signed soon after 9/11. As our prayers go out to the entire country, may we also pray for wisdom for Prime Minister Singh and the Parliament, that they may act with prudence and learn from our country's mistakes.

Sojourners relies on the support of readers like you to sustain our message and ministry.

Guys - all heck is breaking loose in the Canadian parliament and we may be headed back to the polls just 7 weeks after having been there; Harper's minority Conservative gov't could topple next Monday with the Liberals, New Democrats and Bloc Quebecois (separtists) forming a coalition or sending us back to the voting booth. Talk of "tinpot dictator" and "banana republic" is flying fast and free in our national Parliament which we now refer to as "The Sandbox."

My biggest concern is that my source of M&Ms from the U.S. could be cut off by virtue of this crisis. Please have the Nimetz on standby!!

Steven Colbert suggested that India should do what the US did after 9/11, attack a country that had absolutely nothing to do with it. He suggested New Zeland.

I harken back to earlier posts that suggested how different the world would be now if the Amish had been put in charge of Homeland Security. I think it would be a life-changing event if the survivors of the victims (and all of us) would reach out to the survivors of the perpetrators. I am praying that horrendous event will be a call to heal ancient wounds and to bring people closer together rather than drive them apart.

Peace.

Jim, I concur with your appeal for wisdom for the leaders of India and Pakistan. Unless cooler head prevail in both of these countries, what began as the tragic loss of some 200 souls could result in the deaths of tens of thousands (as has already happened in Iraq) or God help us, in the millions if these countries use the nuclear weapons that they both have.

The first resource is prayer. After that (probably during that) our many paths seem to diverge. However, the only way to possibly have a positive impact on a global situation like this will be through unity. If we can voice our love and compassion through groups like Sojourners, I think our voices can be heard.

Any thoughts?

Despite India's fix to blame Pakistan, this great evil has its roots in earlier ones, including violent disputes over Kashmir. Once again, we see escalating cycles of violence as the latest victims in turn seek their own solutions of retribution, tempted towards delusions of redemptive violence.
