World AIDS Day: Mourning, Celebration, and Rededication

Yesterday our nation and world commemorated the 20th global observance of World AIDS Day. Like in past years, the day was marked by candlelight vigils, services of this remembrance, and awareness raising events. In addition to remembering and honoring loved ones lost to this preventable and treatable disease, we can now begin to celebrate many of the hard fought gains that have been made in the fight against AIDS around the world. According to UNAIDS, finally fewer people are being infected with HIV and fewer people are dying of AIDS around the world. Over the past five years close to 4 million people in the developing world have been able to access lifesaving antiretroviral drugs, thanks in large part to increased funding through the Presidential Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB, and Malaria. HIV/AIDS has been transformed into one of those rare issues that garner true bipartisan support, in part because of the broad social movement composed of people living with HIV, students, health care workers, and faith advocates that have pushed on the outside to make the issue to transcend partisan politics and ideological stalemate. In July, this broad coalition helped push through Congress a $48 billion over five year reauthorization of the Tom Lantos and Henry Hyde Global Leadership Act with $48 billion. We must celebrate that fatalism, denial, and apathy are being replaced by greater leadership, hope, and action.

Yet World AIDS Day is also a day to confront the mountains that still need to be moved in order to end this epidemic. The world is still losing the struggle to prevent new infections. For every two people who start taking treatment today, another five will become newly infected. As a resident of our nation's capitol, I'm painfully aware that one in eight people living in D.C. is living with HIV. While attention has often shifted abroad, the crisis of HIV/AIDS in the U.S., particularly among African-Americans, has turned into an emergency that demands a PEFPFAR-like response from a new Obama administration. These unacceptable realities require us to rededicate ourselves to the work of tearing down the walls of stigma that too often still surround the disease and redress the marginalization that so often fuels the epidemic. The pandemic reveals both our vulnerability and our interdependence and lends greater urgency to addressing human rights abuses, gender inequalities, and weak health and social systems. Through ministries of care, education, empowerment, and advocacy we can help end this epidemic.

"Aids" is from the word meaning "to help." The acronym AIDS is the initials of "Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome."

In my opinion and as a Believer in Jesus the Christ and an openly gay man, too, we would have less of a problem with homosexuals contracting the virus called HIV if Christians had accepted homosexuality as a normal sexual orientation and not proof-texted scriptures which had no connection with non-pagan ritual consensual same-gender sexual activity.

For almost a year in 1991, I was a volunteer as an independent Pentecostal evangelist on the Spiritual Advisory Committee (SAC) of AIDS Project Los Angeles. I was living in N. Hollywood at the time. I moved back to Tulsa Oklahoma in January 1992 and have been involved in personal HIV/AIDS Ministry doing volunteer work independently of other organizations.

The Center for Disease Control and other agencies which work with those infected with HIV and/or have been diagnosed with a HIV/AIDS opportunistic disease have decided to let folks call HIV/AIDS a "disease" and they are calling AIDS a virus.

The "S" of AIDS stands for "syndrome" and in the medical field a syndrome is a list of symptoms/conditions related to a particular disease. AIDS is not actually a disease and wasn't called one in the beginning.

Every HIV/AIDS symptomatic (aka AIDS opportunistic) disease can be contracted by a person who does not even have HIV.

When there is a cure and prevention by vaccination for the virus known as HIV and also the HIV/AIDS symptomatic diseases, a whole lot of diseases will have cures and prevention by vaccinations, too.

I used to be a member of the Assemblies of God (AG) denomination before I moved to LA in 1984.

I am on the AG news email update list and they have non-judgmental ministries to non-homosexuals in other countries, especially Africa.

While it is not officially written into the General Council of the Assemblies of God's actual doctrine, the GCAG has adopted an "Official Position Paper on Homosexuality." It is 100% based on ignorant stereotypes and proof-texted scriptures which don't have any connection with people we would call homosexuals during the Bible period.

Before I moved to LA, I was a member of Tulsa's Christian Chapel Assembly of God. Since I have moved into the church's neighborhood in July, I have attended a few Sunday morning worship services. I set up an appointment to talk to the current pastor who was just a member of the church when I left years ago. He seemed not to have a problem with my telling him that I am a homosexual and openly gay. I told him why I did not agree with the AG Position Paper also.

I know for sure that he doesn't judge me nor does he even doubt that I have a real relationship with Jesus.

But, Christian Chapel does not have a ministry for those with HIV/AIDS. I told the pastor that I will not even ask to be a member of an AG because of its official homophobia stance.
