Jimmy Carter Interview: 'We Can Have Peace in the Holy Land'

090202-jimmy-carterFormer President Jimmy Carter just published a new book about the ongoing violent unrest in the Middle East titled, We Can Have Peace in the Holy Land: A Plan That Will Work.

In the book, Carter, 85, revisits the contributions of past U.S. presidents toward peace in Israel and Palestine, as well as his hopes that President Obama might be able to complete the task.

Late last week, I had the opportunity to speak to the Nobel Peace Prize winner about the spiritual, as well as political, issues surrounding the quest for peace in the Holy Lands. (The following transcript has been edited for clarity.)

It seems to me that since the election Sojo has had several newcomers who come with an agenda, post on a single thread or hang around for a couple of weeks, and then they are gone.

I just found out that over 20,000 abortions are performed in Israel every year!! And now Obama is going to use our tax dollars to fund abortion worldwide? That is terrible! How many hundreds of thousands of pre-born babies will have to die? How long must we endore a President that supports the slaughter of the pre-born... Obama sucks!

by: BlueDeacon

02-03-2009 @ 3:30pm

Uh -- funding abortions in other countries has since 1973 been illegal under Federal law. Please get your facts straight.

How long will we continue to support this nation that kills it's most innocent citizens. We stop sending aid/support to everyone but El Salvador, Nicaragua, Hungary, Poland, Russian Federation, Ireland where abortion is illegal or more restrictive laws are being passed.

The fact is the Hyde amendment, which is the federal law banning the funding of abortion, does not apply oversees. The Mexico City policy that Bush had in place did ban abortion funding. But Obama got rid of the Mexico City policy.

As I write, abortion advocates are applying for money from the Obama administration that they will use to promote abortion to the public, lobby countries to legalize abortion, build abortion clinics, and advance their obsession with "choice" around the world.

That's a fact!

by: missingbush

Jeff, we are not talking about aid to countries. We are talking about funding NGOs that promote abortion. BIG difference.

I admire President Carter for his efforts towards achieving peace in the Middle East - both during his presidency and during the years since he left office. As long as there is a chance for reconciliation between the parties there, we should do all that we can to promote it. I'm hopeful that the new president and secretary of state will be successful towards settling the issue.

Two questions:

1) Where do you get your information? If it comes from a "pro-life" advocacy group it will be discounted because such groups have been known to stretch the truth for the sake of outrage -- which frankly doesn't work anymore. (If that be the case McCain would be president.)

2) What it the world does that have to do with the topic at hand?

BlueDeacon,

Where do you get your info? Does it come from one of those "pro-choice" groups? Because they do more than stretch the truth! So you want to attack the messenger because you cannot deal with the message? Be my guest!

What I have stated thus far about the Mexico City is a well known fact. Can you handle the facts??

Obama uses our money to promote abortion around the world. Deal with it!

by: missingbush

And also, I don't have to get my info from advocacy groups. I've been to the abortion clinics. I've talked to the people inside of them. I've talked women out of going inside of them. And I've talked to people who have first hand knowledge of women killed in abortion clinics because of money hungry abortionists. I don't need an advocacy group to know that what goes on in those clinics is pure evil!
