Yesterday, Acting Assistant Attorney General Loretta King sent a letter to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office announcing a Department of Justice investigation of alleged "discriminatory police practices and unconstitutional searches and seizures conducted by the MCSO," among other alleged violations of federal law under the direction of Sheriff Joe Arpaio. The formal investigation follows a request by Congressman John Conyers (head of the House Judiciary Committee) for the DOJ to respond to the myriad of complaints of racial profiling in Maricopa County.

A racial profiling expert called this the "first civil-rights investigation stemming from immigration enforcement" undertaken by the Department of Justice.

This is exactly what we requested. Sojourners online activists submitted more than 9,000 letters to Attorney General Eric Holder, and alongside other groups like ACORN, National Day Labor Organizing Network, and America's Voice, the total was well over 35,000. Together we cried, "enough," and we won.

Thank you.

However, "la lucha sigue"-- the fight continues. The investigation of Sheriff Arpaio may take months. In the meantime, we must continue our collective efforts to uphold the civil rights and human dignity of immigrant communities around the country.

According to The Associated Press, The Justice Department wrote in a letter that it will focus on alleged patterns of police discrimination based on national origin. As I noted the other day, Arpaio is already being sued in a civil case for exactly the same thing.

There is little room in Arizona to avoid the accusation of racial profiling when arresting illegal immigrants for specific crimes. I live in Arizona and I can say that we don't see many blue eyed, blond illegal immigrants. Racial profiling is an issue that is brought up by many so called minority groups when they encounter the law enforcement officials. The people of Arizona are footing the bill for a lot of people, a really lot of people, who don't carry their load. Quite a bit of leeway is given the people who want to be here...such as "press one for English" in the choice tree for many companies. Some might ask, "Why should I have to "press one" for English, this is my country where most speak English." Maybe those who don't/can't speak English should "press one". This point is made to indicate the leeway and space made for those who don't/can't speak English, not that "press one" is a real hardship. In recent events in this country, it seems all too common that when a person who is non Caucasian is arrested or otherwise encountered by either the police or a statement that is contrary to that persons goals, "RACIAL PROFILING" is raised as the primary reason for the encounter.
