A Must Read from Frederick Douglass

090403-frederick-douglasOne of my heroes is Frederick Douglass. I have a list of folks whose stuff I regularly read on and read about, and Frederick Douglass is one of them. Words in today's world have grown to be an interesting sensation. I believe in the power of words via teaching, preaching, blogging, writing, etc. At the essence, I do believe in the adage that "the pen is mightier than the sword." I just think that claim is tested today like never before because in our digital and social media world, it's easy to be poseurs, pretenders, and, well, people full of words and lacking in the deeper context and story of meaning, substance, labor, pursuit, perseverence, and conviction. What am I saying? Words are nice but actions need to accompany words.

Thanks for this post. I recently read a book that compared Lincoln and Douglass which described the way in which each of these great men influenced the other.

I thought that the following quote originated with Andrew Jackson:

"One and God make a majority."

Frederick Douglass is also one of my heroes. Just think, it was against the law for him -- as a slave -- to learn how to read. And yet he did it anyway. He was badly beaten more than once for being "uppity" and "not knowing his place." And yet he was able to escape and help build the abolitionist movement. He also sided with the struggles of women.

Frederick Douglass is also one of my heroes. Just think, it was against the law for him -- as a slave -- to learn how to read. And yet he did it anyway. He was badly beaten more than once for being "uppity" and "not knowing his place." And yet he was able to escape and help build the abolitionist movement. He also sided with the struggles of women.
