Any action that is equipped with a hidden agenda is not healthy especially if more people are not satisfied with the end-result. It should be re-evaluated for the sake of the majority.

The people of Vieques need justice - this issue often gets sweeped under the carpet. I am glad someone is actually pushing this issue in the media.

I am pleased to see Vieques and Puerto Rico discussed here. As a Puerto Rican, I can only be grateful to those who show an interest on the still unsolved problems related to our political relation with United States. As you article well points out, the US Navy is responsible for everything they did in Vieques and for its consequences and results. Although I am not aware of the details of what have been done and what not after the Navy ceased bombing Vieques, I do notice a very slow pace on the environmental clean up. Not only that. A few weeks ago a US Senator suggested that the Navy go back to use Vieques for other military purposes. As you can see, Puerto Rico is subject to policy changes in Washington and there is little we can do without any political power. Being an unincorporated territory of USA, subject to the plenary powers of Congress over its territories and possesions, instead of a solution for us, has always been THE problem. That is why I I am an Independence advocate. It is the right solution for the People of Puerto Rico.

I remember seeing a TV news report on Vieques many years ago, but it was about undetonated munitions on the island. Was anything ever done about that?

by: tmccool

The compensation should be two-fold: free medical care for those who are suffering and immediate clean-up of the island. I am not in favor of additional monetary awards for suffering, emotional distress, yadda yadda yadda.

Any action that is equipped with a hidden agenda is not healthy especially if more people are not satisfied with the end-result. It should be re-evaluated for the sake of the majority.
