Immigration Reform: The time has come

The time has come for comprehensive immigration reform. After several failed attempts in past years, the president has promised it and the White House is showing a clear commitment to it. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has said that it is one of his top three priorities for this year. Next week, the president will meet at the White House with congressional leadership on immigration reform. The debate on reform is moving and will only intensify.

Take Action on This Issue

Tell the Senate: Don't Cut International Aid

Please join us in telling the Senate: Protect foreign aid programs that help the poor and the needy.

There is a new factor now in the debate. A grassroots movement is growing across the country and there is increasing support for reform. And the faith community is playing a major role. In fact, the growing movement toward immigration reform is deeply rooted in the faith community, across the political spectrum. It's very important to note that this isn't a liberal or a "Left" issue anymore, or even an "ethnic" issue. There are conservative Christian leaders, Latino, African-American, and Anglo, who are seeing immigration reform as a critical matter of faith, not just another political issue or a special interests issue.

Around the country, people of faith are taking action. The Family Unity tour sponsored by Rep. Luis Gutierrez traveled to evangelical churches in over 21 cities over the past year, calling people of faith to take action against the separation of families. Clergy in Iowa are organizing and taking a prophetic stance in support of immigration reform after the devastating Postville raid in May 2008. We were part of an effort that sent 30,000 letters to the Department of Justice to stop Sheriff Arpaio and his racial profiling of Latinos in Arizona. We haven't seen a response to an action alert like that in some time. We see clergy holding vigils at detention centers calling for just treatment of immigrants that were denied due process. Family values are at stake here. When the U.S. government is separating families, it is getting at the heart of our Christian conviction. There is now the activity and momentum of a real movement across the country. A rising tide of Christian faith says that this is something that we can no longer ignore. The timing is right and hopefully this fall we will see a strong effort from the White House on comprehensive immigration reform.

In response, we have re-launched Christians for Comprehensive Immigration Reform. A new statement of principles has already been endorsed by 27 national religious organizations and 40 leaders. It proposes five guiding principles:

  • Enforcement initiatives that are consistent with humanitarian values.
  • Reforms in our family-based immigration system that reduce waiting times for separated families to be reunited.
  • A process for all immigrant workers and their families already in the U.S. to earn citizenship upon satisfaction of specific criteria.
  • An expansion of legal avenues for workers and families to enter our country and work in a safe and legal manner with their rights and due process fully protected.
  • Examining solutions to address the root causes of migration, such as economic disparities between sending and receiving nations.

You can sign the statement of principles and join the growing movement of Christians who are deeply concerned about the lack of immigration reform in our nation. And to support the growing grassroots movement for immigration reform, a new interactive Web site has also been launched, designed to equip the faith community to engage in the immigration debate. The site features organizing resources and a clearinghouse of information on the need for immigration reform and the role the faith community can play in supporting reform efforts.

The time has come. We need comprehensive immigration reform. And with people of faith leading the way, we can achieve it.

FilmDoctor, I agree with everything you said. I have a friend who was born in the Philippines and became a U.S. citizen in 1981. In 1982, she petitioned to allow two of her sisters to come to the U.S. An INS employee said that they would wait about five years, for the visas to be approved. In 1986, Congress passed an amnesty law, and my friend, Grace, was told that they would need to wait longer, since INS employees needed to process the illegals who got amnesty. In 2008, after 26 years of waiting (because of the illegals), Grace's sisters finally came to the U.S. During that time, at least 10 million people came to the U.S., illegally, and some people think that the law-breakers should be allowed to stay,.

This is the immigration reform that our country needs. Congress should triple the fines for employers who hire illegals. This would usually be a deterrent. The money, from these fines, should be used to build a brick wall, along the Mexican border and to hire more border patrol agents.

I think history shows that progressive change is less likely to happen when immigration is at its highest. The lack of gains made by freed slaves after the Civil War can be traced in part to the growing availability of immigrant labor, my grandparents included. The U.S. today would probably be a more progressive society offering programs like universal health care if the U.S. had had a strong union movement like Western Europe. The U.S. has never had a labor movement, however, as strong as those in Europe in part because workers here who attempted to organize could always be replaced, and were, by the next immigrant wave. It is no coincidence that the most progressive period in American history-- from the New Deal to the Great Society, the 1930s to 1960s -- was also the period that immigration was the lowest.

I also think an immigrant already here bringing their family privileges that person's family over other families, as they can bring not just spouse and under age children, but parents, spouses' parents, brothers and sister of both the husband and wife, and then all their spouses, parents, and even adult children. This encourages enclaves and discourages intermarriage. In this day of cell phones, air travel, etc., there are many ways for far-flung families to stay in touch and support each other. No family or group should be advantaged over others in immigration.

Mexicans are our neighbors, and you know what God said about that.

The age-old pesky U.S.-Mexico border problem has taxed the resources of both countries, led to long lists of injustices, and appears to be heading only for worse troubles in the future. Guess what? The border problem can never be solved. Why? Because the border IS the problem! It's time for a paradigm change.

Never fear, a satisfying, comprehensive solution is within reach: the Megamerge Dissolution Solution. Simply dissolve the border along with the failed Mexican government, and megamerge the two countries under U.S. law, with mass free 2-way migration eventually equalizing the development and opportunities permanently, with justice and without racism, and without threatening U.S. sovereignty or basic principles.

The problem is that the system is broken. You obviously don't know how long it takes one who LEGALLY petitions this country to get processed. I know a case of a mother and daughter who started the process 25 years ago, The daughter was 3 years old at the time.

Their sponsor was the mothers's sister, a US Citizen, and an assistant Professor at one of our Universities. The mother has just got her paperwork processed and the daughter who is now 28 years old is still waiting.

Is it any wonder we have illegal immigrants??????????????

Because, after all, if people are going to do it anyway, we should support the activity by making it legal and as safe as possible, perhaps even subsidize the activity to make sure poor people are not excluded from exercising their rights as well.

Thank you for the leadership from Sojourners, Jim Wallis and Allison Johnson with the Christians for Comprehensive Immigration Reform initiative on the issue of compassionate comprehensive immigration reform. There is clearly a wide community coalition behind this movement here in Los Angeles and across the country. I pray that people of the Christian faith tradition will head the words of Jesus to care for the "least of these" seeing immigrants as neighbors, our brothers and sisters and encourage their congressional representatives to act favorably for reform.

Why is no one speaking to the heart of this issue? Why are these people coming here in the first place? Is it not because of the total disdain for justice and equal treatment in their own country which amounts to almost total lawlessness? I think a deeper question might be what are we allowing to immigrate? If we want to allow anyone to immigrate without regard for legality then what are we opening ourselves up to. Our newspapers are full of stories of Americans being killed by drunk drivers many of them immigrants who through their disdain for law continue to drive drunk. Why should we have one standard for our own people and a second standard for any other ethnicity? I believe that the Gospel calls us to a high standard but if you apply duality to the gospel like many want to do with the immigration issue then the gospel will be about as irrelevant as our laws are beginning to become.

I do not believe that the vast majority of undocumented people in this country want to be cheaters and lawbreakers. I have met and talked with and become friends with many of them. Mr. Wallis continues to flaunt Scripture with his ignorant policies and writings. That is not the measure of a true Christian, as far as this Bible believer is concerned!!!! I believe, Tom -- and I think what Jim is getting at -- is that good reform will address the problems in our immigration policy. I do not believe that the vast majority of undocumented people in this country want to be cheaters and lawbreakers. I have met and talked with and become friends with many of them. They are people who come from families just like mine -- loving, caring, hopeful, hard-working, spiritually centered, strong family values. I think we need a policy that helps all people, not just "us." That's what the scripture I've read advocates.
