Bombing the Moon? Really?

There's a joke that re-surfaces in Indian country every so often. It goes like this: When NASA was preparing for the Apollo project, it did some astronaut training near the Navajo Indian reservation.

One day, a Navajo elder and his son came across the space crew. The old man, who spoke only Navajo, asked a question that his son translated. "What are these guys in the big suits doing?" A member of the crew said they were practicing for their trip to the moon. The old man got very excited and asked if he could send a message to the moon with the astronauts.

Recognizing a promotional opportunity, the NASA folks found a tape recorder. After the old man recorded his message, they asked his son to translate it. He refused. They then took the tape to the reservation, where many from the rest of the tribe listened and laughed but refused to translate the elder's message to the moon.

Finally, the NASA crew called in an official government translator. He reported that the message said, "Watch out for these guys. They have come to steal your land."

While the joke's implications are sadly true, perhaps what makes it humorous to me is the fact that the moon belongs to everyone, so how could any one people claim it as theirs? In fact, I think this is much the same attitude that our Native American ancestors had when the Europeans began "negotiating" for our land. And today, I have the same feeling as I hear America is going to bomb the moon in search of water. Really? By the time you read this, it will have happened.

It seems the more things change, the more they stay the same. The same hubris that allowed those Euro-American ancestors to claim America as "theirs" is still at work. This time it is on the moon and "on behalf of science." Wasn't science somehow involved in that whole "discovery" thing? Chilling! America's unilateralism has perhaps reached an all-time high -- all the way to the moon! How is it our right to "bomb the moon?" I wonder if any of the other 6 billion people on the planet who share the moon have an opinion of this? I wonder if the Creator has an opinion?

The writer of Psalm 8 certainly did, and I'm asking a similar question.

When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers-
the moon and the stars you set in place-
what are mere mortals that you should think about them,
human beings that you should care for them? Psalm 8:3,4 NLT

No! And a thousand times No! Science was *not* part of the discovery and rape and stealing of First Nation lands! I know it has become popular in conservative circles these days to accuse science, but "science" is unbiased. It is a search for the truth of the physical reality using a particular method, the scientific method. It is then used and misused by others, for their own ends. It is unconscionable to suggest that science is at fault for the grave injustices done to the First Nations people.

As it is to compare research on the moon to what happened in Australia and the Americas. We (white people) were incredibly, horribly wrong for what we did. We stole land and committed genocide. It belonged to those who were already here. Even if no one was living in this "virgin land", we engaged in a systematic environmental destruction that continues to this present day, destroying the land for our own benefit, pillaging and killing off innumerable species, ushering in the 6th Mass Extinction Event in Earth's history- and the first to be caused by one species.

But I'm sorry, no one lives on the moon. No one. It's dead. There are no life forms there. There is no hint of life forms. This isn't an issue of taking from some other people, or even destroying the environment. It's rock. It's rock. That's it. This isn't hubris. This is science and investigation. To call it hubris is to engage in anti-science rhetoric and to attempt to push us back into a Medieval Age where science is unknown and people believed any old superstition because it was popular and it's what their forefathers believed. Sure, America is on that track now, as we lag more and more in science behind every other Western nation, and a growing legion of 2/3rds World Nations. But it's articles like this that will help us run pell-mell down this slippery slope to the canyon of the Luddites and Troglodytes, forever dwelling in the caves of our own making.

I do think all humanity has a profound capacity to be deluded in our hearts and minds. I believe any culture/individual that is confident in its calling and purpose is equally willing to step into the shoes of another framework as a way to think critically about ourselves; because confidence in our ways must include a confidence that we have ways to check against the deceitful nature of our being.

I don't know if the act has inherent meaning. Does the mapping of the human genome represent a desire to play God; or a desire to submit to God??

I do think all humanity has a profound capacity to be deluded in our hearts and minds. "I had taken some Indians by force from the first island that I came to, in order that they might learn our language, and communicate to us what they knew" Christopher Columbus

"When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it." Genesis 3:6

The desire to know. The temptation to be gods.

The ability to step outside our framework and think critically about how we treat knowledge and ways of knowing (e.g. science) is absolutely fundamental to stewarding a God-given capacity to know.

This ought be one of the great gifts the Body of Christ could bring to this world--walking out how to place knowledge under the Lordship of Christ.

Science is pure only in theory. It is pure, just as the tree in the forest is silent when it crashes to the floor with no one present to perceive it. But science is practiced--by humanity.

The moon--is there--to be known. To be discovered. To be acted upon.

So we may know God? Or so we may be God?

It is a very valuable question; and if we simply reject it;; we are likely not fit explorers.

Christopher Columbus named the natives he first saw "Indios" because he thought he landed near the Asian Hindus River which in Spanish is "El Rio Indio."

That was rude.

You can't assume much about spelling these days when some people are posting via iphone or text.

If you have a Master's degree, why did you run everything together so much?

What has been done in the name of the God of Christianity and in the name of God and/or Jesus here in North America would not have been approved of by YHWH Elohim (aka LORD God) nor Jesus.

Don't blame God nor Jesus for the evil done in their name.

It seems that every element, mineral, etc., that is on the earth appears on planets and the moons in our solar system.

If there is water below the surface of the moon, why should one be surprised if it's discovered there?
