More Walls Need to Fall

091110-israeli-wallAs we celebrate the tearing down of the Berlin Wall, let us reflect on walls that are currently being built across the U.S.-Mexico border as well as in Bethlehem and the West Bank. Such walls never seem to contain the criminal element, which always finds a way to circumvent whatever structures are put in place. Instead, they serve to only further divide and isolate us instead of exploring how we can come together. Here's a piece I wrote for Killing the Buddha reflecting on the increased travel restrictions in the Holy Land.

Becky, did you think to consider that the walls you cite were built for different reasons? It's as if you saw an F-15 and declared all aircraft bad because some are made for warfare.

Surely you must know these things, but a quick primer on the walls:

- The Berlin wall was built by a totalitarian communist power to keep it's people from escaping

- The wall in in the West Bank was built by a democracy to keep out terrorist suicide bombers who were killing their people in droves. And contrary to what you say, this wall has kept out the suicide bombers and has been successful in securing Israel.

- The wall along the U.S.-Mexican border was built by a democracy to enforce it's legally-arrived-at immigration laws.

No I am not saying that anything a democracy does is right and good, but you do have to take that into account. As you do the purpose of the wall.

You do not, so I am forced to conclude that you are engaged in the worst form of moral relativism.
