Can I Get A Witness (for Immigration Reform)?

100129-090501-225-immigrationSome in Washington would have us believe that immigration reform is politically untenable and economically illogical. However, God is on the move among Christians who care about the immigrants in their midst. This week's gathering in Phoenix, Arizona, demonstrated that they are invested in bringing their voices to the table and are being transformed in the process.

Please join us in telling the Senate: Protect foreign aid programs that help the poor and the needy.

More than 130 people from all across the country joined a "A Day of Witness and Action on Immigration Reform" sponsored by the Christian Community Development Association, Sojourners, and the National Association of Evangelicals. The morning's programming was unabashedly biblical, with solid instruction from Old Testament scholar Dr. Daniel Carroll R. (author of Christians at the Border), a moving testimony from Pastor Ben Tseng, an Asian-American pastor from Chicago who has undocumented Asian youth in his church, and a word from Rev. Dr. Troy Jackson of Cincinnati who brought church engagement on political issues like immigration reform into context with the history of the civil rights movement in the South.

Instead of your standard conference-style lunch in a box, small groups joined Latino immigrant families in their homes for delicious carne asada, rice and beans, and holy conversation. We savored the opportunity to talk to local Phoenix residents about their struggles, their family life, and their faith, and offer our stories as well. One host offered her personal tale of arriving to the U.S. as an undocumented immigrant and after sharing, turned to the group and asked, "Now that you've heard my story, what are you going to do?" Her guests made concrete commitments and sacred promises to take her story back home and testify to the brokenness of the U.S. immigration system in their congregations and communities.

I've been part of many conferences, training, and meetings on immigration reform, but this one was altogether different. One of the most powerful aspects was the element of individual and corporate lament. Several prominent evangelical leaders shared their regret for the absence of the white evangelical church in the major social struggles in recent U.S. history. They felt like the white evangelical church didn't "show up" during the civil rights movement or even during the last immigration reform debate, but it's clear they are standing up now. We prayed together in at the Civic Park and asked God to forgive us for our "failures to act as the Church when you have called us to do so." It was a powerful confession that allowed us to move forward and heed the call to action.

The story doesn't end in Arizona. This dedicated group of church leaders from across the nation committed not only to preach about God's heart for the sojourner, but to hold discussions about immigration in their congregations and to host prayer services with other Christians and invite their members of Congress to join. Simultaneously, there were five "Evangelical Witness for Immigration Reform" vigils in Miami, Memphis, Denver, Chicago, and Orange County, California, for those who could not travel to the event but who whose hearts were stirred to action by the urgency of the immigration issue. Just one event has inspired a movement bringing evangelical Christians out of their comfort zones into compassion for the stranger and forward to political action on immigration reform.

Join the movement by signing our petition and tell Congress that you're a Christian for Comprehensive Immigration Reform, too.

. Its all about chasing shadows.
By that I mean latching on to this or that latest, most innovative idea that some self styled money making guru has put out in the hope it'll go viral and make them a lot of money off the backs of all the headless chickens who will follow them blindly down a blind alley. Its a shame but a truism nonetheless that people will follow where someone they see as an expert leads. Even if they lead them to certain disaster, which is what most of the gurus tend to do to their flocks.

Perhaps pushing for reform of the Mexican political system and power structure would result in more reform of the immigration system than any effort on the American side. Additionally, reform of the Mexican system would aid the undocumented Mexicans as it would provide the undocumented Mexicans with incentive to return to Mexico.

Much of the focus is on "undocumented persons" the story is much deeper that that. My documented daughter-in-law is currently stranded in Taiwan and unable to reenter the country for some alleged lapse in visa status in the early 90's. She came to this country on a visitor visa, then got a student visa and went from 4th grade through HS on a student visa. Then she got an Investment visa and is now married to my son (a naturalized US citizen) She applied for citizenship 3 years ago and still has not had an initial interview.

She has renewed her visa several times since the alleged lapse and has been to Taiwan and back on numerous occasions. We need reform but the first step must be take care of those who have attempted to play by the rules. After ICE gets its act together on them we can start to address those who have tried to cut corners.

People who call themselves by the pagan created epithet, 'Christian,' need to be careful on how they use what is in the Bible for Immigration Reform.

During the 1st Century AD, it was easy for residents of one country to travel to another within the Roman Empire which included Israel, Judea and Samaria.

So, in Jesus' earthly ministry time, it was easy to accept the aliens and offer the hospitality without the aliens/immigrants breaking any laws.

The majority of the undocumented immigrants now in the USA knew before they crossed the US border where there are no ports of entry they would be here illegally.

We as followers of Jesus are NOT supposed to support those who deliberately break the law.

I am for immigration reform in the same way that I would like to have "The Way" RE-formed back into the Scripture way.

It wasnt NAFTA that decimated Mexican Agriculture. It was our Farm Policy: Subsidies for Big US Ag, Tarrifs for Mexican Ag, with ADM, ConAgra, and Monsanto being the biggest beneficiaries of this. The point is that there are US policies that we have the ability to influence that would, in turn, have a profound impact on Mexican policy.

Yes, keeping people cooped up in Mexico would help to destabilize the government there. True enough. But you ignore one major factor that precipitated a growing Mexican Exodus-- NAFTA-- it decimated Mexican agriculture. People headed to the cities in Mexico and did not find jobs. Then they came here. That narrative albeit true does not find its way into the press because we are supposed to love unbridled free markets.

Advocating the destabilization of Mexico with its ensuing bloodshed and ignoring our partial role in causing the migration of people is patently uncharitable and un-Christian.

People may have known that they were breaking the law by coming in illegally but when you have the choice of feeding your family by coming here illegally or watching them waste away, I would posit that there is a higher moral law being served in their coming here.

Mennoman, I think you and I are basically in agreement here. I'm not advocating destabilization of Mexico. I was responding to Cav that we do not control Mexican policy. We need to act charitably and treat the so-called illegals as undocumented neighbors. Somewhere in Leviticus it says treat the alien among you as a citizen. Leviticus says before Jesus said it to love your neighbor as yourself. The undocumented among us are still our neighbors. The whole question of national law and religious admonitions is a tricky one. I believe in separation of church and state. Church cannot dictate to state, nor vice versa, but as Christian citizens we can voice our opinions to our elected leaders. I have no argument with what you say here.

The greased pig is loose again. This only works if the immigrants look like them and also if they convert to Christianity. I am an African-American woman, Baptist, and I trust nothing in this article. "Christians" went to Africa and look what happened in the name of God. Don't think for one moment this "movement" aligned with legitimate, non-faith based (but not discriminatory) immigration reform movements. Everyone who claims to be Christian is not Christlike.

NAFTA decimated American manufacturing, but Americans don't chase the jobs into Mexico illegally.

Apparently Mexicans are also incapable of "transforming" their government outside of violence.

It wasnt NAFTA that decimated Mexican Agriculture. It was our Farm Policy: Subsidies for Big US Ag, Tarrifs for Mexican Ag, with ADM, ConAgra, and Monsanto being the biggest beneficiaries of this. The point is that there are US policies that we have the ability to influence that would, in turn, have a profound impact on Mexican policy.

The trick is to recognize a shadow when you see it!
