Not Your Typical Valentine's Day-Type Love

100210-valentine-heart-candyThis week my friend Sara reminded me that the really amazing thing about 1 Corinthians 13 is that even hundreds of thousands of schlocky wedding and inspirational posters and bad Christian coffee mugs can't kill it. Paul's hymn to love is perhaps one of the most recognizable texts in the New Testament. And it is really beautiful

This post is beautiful and so essential right now. I have always been opposed to celebrating Valentine's day because it failed to capture the love Paul speaks of in scripture. Thank you for reminding us and showing us how powerful a "God love smackdown" can be!

We forget that God loved us enough in our sinful state that He sacrificed his only Son. We are commanded to love our neighbors as ourselves. This is in their current state.

Paul's reminders of what love "is not" should put all of us to shame because most if not all of us are guilty of most of the "is not"s.

We forget that this is the basis of the Gospel. We are loved so we must love! And we are not allowed to be selective about it. We must love our enemies, love those who annoy us, love those who have been rejected by everyone else, etc.

This was so awesome and beautiful it brought me to tears. For I know I don't always feel 'loved' and I don't believe I always share the radical Love Christ gives to us as I should. What a great meditation on Christ trans-formative and freeing Love.

Excellent post and very insightful into the nature of God's love for all mankind. Clearly, this was born of the Holy Spirit within you.

"This love is found in the gaze of God as God looks upon us naked and whole. Because this type of love is characterized by the giver, not the receiver. Gone are the strivings and manipulations and efforts to make ourselves more lovable. In the face-to-face gaze of the beloved, we are known because we are loved. We aren't loved because we are known."

Those words remind me of what Jesus said.

"As the father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's commands and remain in his love. I have told you this that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command." John 15:9-14

Jesus invites us to know a love that knows no bounds by participating in the same love relationship he has with the Father.

Thank you Nadia for sharing this with us.

The strongest encouragement and witness we can give to another is to share the vision of seeing them as God sees: "I have seen the deep love God has for you." In my experience, it's easier to see this love for another than for oneself.

These valentine status questions are so off the wall, neither of you are likely to take the answer too seriously. I suppose a woman might be turned off by questions about "love games" or someone too religious might not want to engage in discussions of "past lives"
