African Lent

100222-the-shadow-of-the-sunHere's an idea for Lent that will do more good than giving up desserts: Read a book about contemporary sub-Saharan Africa. It's not a penance, though it can hurt. And seeing how much of the rest of the world lives sure does put a lot of my minor irritations and even major problems in perspective.

Consider a novel or memoir by an African, such as

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Half of a Yellow Sun (Nigeria)
Athol Fugard, Tsotsi (South Africa)
Ishmael Beah, A Long Way Gone (Sierra Leone)
Peter Godwin, When a Crocodile Eats the Sun (Zimbabwe)

Or read a journalist's first-person account, like

Dave Eggers, What Is the What (Sudan)
Tracy Kidder, Strength in What Remains (Burundi)
Ryszard Kapu?ci?ski, The Shadow of the Sun (post-colonial Africa)
Philip Gourevitch, We Wish to Inform You That Tomorrow We Will be Killed With Our Families (Rwanda)

If you'd rather watch a movie, try one of these:

The Devil Came On Horseback (Sudan)
Tsotsi (South Africa)
War Dance (Uganda)
Hotel Rwanda (Rwanda)

I understand the purpose of the post, but at the same time I can't help but dislike the choices made by the author in her reading and viewing selections. As a Kenyan-American, I have found myself fighting against the notion that Africa is in fact the "Dark Continent" or the "Heart of Darkness." "Hotel Rwanda" is a great film, but it cannot be made to define the essence of a continent. The same goes for excellent books such as "What is What" and "Half of a Yellow Sun." The real troubles in Africa usually don't make exciting reading, and that is why these selections paint a skewed view of the whole continent.
Also, this article props up the notion that sub-Saharan Africa is a single cultural edifice. After all, you would not have a "European Lent."

It's good to understand how the poor in other countries live. Americans tend to think we are the norm. In addition to reading, people should consider a mission trip to Africa.

However, I have noticed a danger in American Christians suddenly learning how desperately poor much of the world is. The shock is often overwhelming. Emotions take over and Americans insist that something be done immediately.

The shock is good, but what needs to follow is a bit of humility. Don't assume that you are the first person in history to discover how poor much of the world is. People have worked on the poverty problem for over a century. We need a willingness to study what has been done to alleviate poverty and what has worked and what hasn't.

What I'd really love to see is a blog about how Christianity is taking hold in much of Africa. In fact, African Christians are often called upon to "teach" American Christians about Scripture, or at least provide a more holistic perspective on the integration of faith and works. Until recently, the Anglican Church in America was under the auspices of the Anglican Church of Africa.

One lasting impression I've had is after befriending an Ethiopian family the year we lived near Chicago. They lived in a two-bedroom apt. with two teenagers and a five-year old. The teenagers were on the honor roll. When I went to say good-bye to the family before we left the area, there were a number of women from Ethiopia in the living room holding a praye meeting. They invited me in and prayed over me. I learned from them how fervently the Ethiopians Evangelical Christians prayed, a true 24-7 practice.
