Beauty and Ugliness in a Shooting's Aftermath

100226-candlesSomething sort of mystical and magical happened after a 19-year-old kid named Papito was killed on our block a few weeks ago. As our neighborhood ached and grieved and cried with his family, we began to create a memorial for Papito where he died

Sojourners relies on the support of readers like you to sustain our message and ministry.

Whoa Shane! What timely acts you are taking.
It takes me back every time to the story about "Yummy" Sandifer who was assassinated by his fellow homies in the 90's. Has anything changed? What is the quality of life for the most defenseless children in our communities?
Do you not also see the faces of the Palestinian children you were with recently, the faces of street urchins in Iraq or Afghanistan, the youth in a Latin American barrio or favela with no where safe to play or a child soldier somewhere in conflict torn Africa. I just can't feel that they are all connected in some way for the same reason.

How do we remind every American adult that they are participating in the parenting of all of these children?
What if every gun shop could be replaced by a music shop? What if every gun could be hammered into a trumpet, steel drum or sax?

Turn every insult into a song of praise.

Shane,

What you are doing is more likely to harden hearts than melt them. You want to use Papito's slaying to put pressure on a gun shop. But I have yet to hear that the shop in question actually sold the gun that was used to kill him.

The owner of the Shooter's Shop may or may not be the unethical individual you portray him to be, but you are not going to persuade him or his customers to change by trying to blame him for a crime he had little to no part in.

There are more gun owners than you may think that care about the appearance of things, about their reputation and respecability, their community and it's safety. They do not want to hear that the guy that is servicing their fire arms is unreliable and willing to make straw sales.

I was just meditating on the cross in Mark 15 this morning, and it's beautiful to see Christians embodying the values of Jesus on the asphalt and concrete of everyday life. I also appreciate the gentle note about people coming into a community from the outside to protest it. There are volumes to be learned in that simple statement.
