Dialogue at the Demonstration: Risking Conversation with the Face of Occupation

Tell the Senate: Don't Cut International Aid

Please join us in telling the Senate: Protect foreign aid programs that help the poor and the needy.

I was attending the remarkable Christ at the Checkpoint conference in Bethlehem (West Bank) in March when I learned about a problem brewing in the village adjacent to Bethlehem: Beit Jala.

On Sunday, March 14, the three cities of Bethlehem, Beit Jala, and Beit Sahour were calling a non-violent demonstration to protest the Israeli destruction of 200 olive trees in Beit Jala. This is a Christian village west of Bethlehem. Remarkably it is surrounded by a 30 ft cement wall and the soldiers come inside the wall to destroy the livelihoods of the Palestinian Christians here. I was invited to join them. I did. It's a privilege to join people in their protest of their occupation.

We joined 75 Palestinians and a handful of Europeans and Americans. There were seniors and children. Banners and flags. The leader gave us a speech about nonviolence (the Arab attorney Jonathan Khuttab translated). "If you come here to throw stones, leave now. We will approach the soldiers in peace even though they have weapons." He then announced: "Now. All older men in the front!" What? And he was looking at me! So there I was, walking between an attorney and an Arab pastor (they locked arms!) -- and down the road you could see a line of Israeli soldiers unloading from two jeeps and two trucks. Their goal: keeping us from the threatened trees and the bulldozers. The Arabs started singing: "Bring down the wall." "Stop our occupation." It dawned on me in a new way, I wasn't in Wheaton anymore.

This is street theater. Political drama. TV cameras followed us from a number of networks. Everyone had a role. But at 50 yards from the military line, the soldiers chose violence. They launched five or six rounds of concussion grenades right into the 75 of us. These explode with a small ball of fire and a concussion that almost knocks you over. One hit next to me and bounced past a little boy and exploded. Smoke was everywhere. But these villagers knew it was coming and they regrouped and kept walking. I figured: well, I've come this far -- let's read the next chapter.

In 10 minutes we had walked right up to the soldiers who were blocking the street. They wore body armor and were heavily armed. Two men stood 10 yards behind them with very heavy guns. They were backup.

And there we stood. The Palestinians asked the soldiers questions like this: "Are you proud to be here?" "Why are you in our village?" "Why build walls and destroy our lives?" A young American woman disguised in sunglasses and a black kafia asked: "Do you understand that what you do is illegal?" It is surreal to watch unarmed people stand inches from armed soldiers and make their case. It was like a picture right out of the movie "Gandhi."

I wondered what happens next. If anyone pushed through the soldiers they would either use tear gas or arrest them. But I tried to collapse the whole thing down to one soldier: the guy in front of me with his rifle and body armor. I was 12 inches from him and simply asked him his name because I could tell he understood English. (Soldiers are ordered not to talk to demonstrators. Of course, no one wants a human face on this thing.) But he spoke. "Jonathan." From New York. 19 years old. One year of military service so far. So young. So seemingly gentle. And he seemed really conflicted. Aiming a rifle at a crowd with kids does something to your heart.

I asked him why he was doing this. He summed up everything in a sentence or two: "These people are dangerous. We must be safe. If we don't do this to them, who knows what they will do. Besides, I'm just following orders."

I talked to him about how complicity in violence will collapse his soul. And "just following orders" is an echo from other times and other bad things. But he was breaking orders by talking. The lieutenant pulled him away after 15 minutes. Soldiers cannot risk making a human connection with their "enemies." When it all broke up, I said goodbye to Jonathan and told him he was probably a good man who may want to think about what this sort of thing is costing him. He surprised me. "You don't know me or what I could do." "No," I said. "I want to believe that this great sadness does not represent you."

I kept wondering what was accomplished. The trees don't have a chance. The poor have little power in front of violent power like this. But we hoped to awaken the consciences of the soldiers. More, I noticed how the Palestinians seemed encouraged as we went back. Their sobriety was changed to an odd elation. They had done something, found their voices, and they kept their peaceful ideals. They were not just passive victims. And it was all nonviolent.

Families encouraged their kids to show up and I suspect it has something to do with teaching them how to handle fear and anger. They refuse to let their children see their parents afraid. One friend told me his daughter had come to her first demonstration when she was 6 months old. I met her there. Today she is 7. And this little girl wasn't scared one bit.

I wish all of my students could have marched. It is a privilege to join a righteous protest. To just do this once and see it up close is transforming. And the lessons can be transferred to countless places in the world. And one more note: You'll also learn if your adrenaline system works. Mine was. Just one concussion grenade will zoom it into overdrive.

This israeli soldier was certainly not proud to be there, but he knew for sure what would happen if the wall would be torn down. Sorry to say, but this street theater was a la good old Stalin. Mr Burge let himself become instrumentalized in a game where he apparently ignores what it is really about

Thanks to professor Burge for his courage and solidarity with the Palestinians struggling to survive against such awful affronts to their human rights and security.

I am poor, but would love to be there someday and be a "Palestinian" if only for one day.

This has been ongoing for sixty plus years now and what is happening today is very beautiful to me. Resistance as peaceful and non threatening is as Our lord did it so long ago.

American Christians may not realize that this Israeli occupation is threatening the lives of brothers and sisters of the Christian faith who are the remnants of Christs people in antiquity. The love of brothers and sisters belongs together in unity facing down oppression with steadfast courage and upright convictions that support the law, humans rights and morality as we know it to be.

Islam and Christianity live side by side in Palestine with Jews from Israel, but from New York city, Florida, Boston, Philadelphia and elsewhere in the USA. Jewish youth go to Palestine to oppress the Arab Christians and Islamic and secular Arab populations of both Israel and Palestine. They do it because their parents are zionists who feel that their children should oppress and debilitate Arabs to cause them to lose hope for better lives in Palestine.

What is so impressive in the Palestinian spirit today is their steadfast honoring of the power of peaceful resistance against violent ideological oppressors intent on walling Arabs away from Israel, but more than that, these walls are breached daily by Israelis to torture the Palestinians by the abuses of check points, infiltrations of spies and illegal arrest, house demolitions and even murder and massacres of defenseless children.

One comment blesses President Obama for helping the Palestinians but this may be a ruse. Every president has feigned support for Palestine and yet conditions worsen and land, lives and love is lost every day to settlements, check points and illegal occupation which is facilitated from the United States congress, the office of the President and from US forces and the State department. Senator Arlen Spector has more Israeli flags in his office than American flags and so do many US diplomats.

Israel is in violation of many UN resolutions, international laws and even the Nuremberg protocals of occupation forged post Hitlers desecrations and massacre of Jews in wolrd war two invoked and established during prosecutions of nazis which were set in place to prevent ethnic cleansing, theft of property and land during war and occupation and which protect Jews today from such abuses but are ignored and violated by US French Russian German Polish and Hungarian Jews every day by supporting the illegal occupation of Palestine with soldiers, money and weapons used illegal to prosecute and illegal occupation.

Jesus said, Not one tittle or jot of the law shall pass away before the son of God comes in Glory to redeem his flocks, but Israel flaunts their impunity by abusing US government and military state department and intelligence forces and assets to shield them from prosecution in US courts, which is corruption in the face of God and humanity which must end if the law is to be respected anywhere.

Israel is not above the law nor are Jews "chosen" because of their breaking of laws, occupation and murder of innocents. Being chosen of God is to show oneself approved by obedience and good stewardship of Gods laws and the laws of mankind as ordained by God.

Every brother and sister of any faith or no faith should realize that breaking the law and defending such abuses by saying."God Gave us this land" is blasphemous and cowardly defense of disobedience of God for greedy reasonings and political posturing, not holiness or love.

What have we if we gain the whole world and have not love, we should ask? Emptiness and heartache for we transgress the law and lie about it, which is willing sin, idol worship of self and denigration of God's own little children which we are asked never to forsake even giving such a one a sip of water find reward in heaven.

Let Obama be blessed when he DOES something not when he says something.

I am so frustrated by the propaganda of end time prophetic voices. Of course there are always two sides to every coin. But stories like this don't make it into Pastor Hagee's sermons.

Most who align themelves with the religious right, will not even listen to a story like this.

Lord may I be faithful to spread the word, to speak truth, to not shrink from those who would lob hateful grenades of biblical prophecy to justify what is happening. May I speak for justice always.

Actually, those doing the most to promote and practice nonviolence in the persuit of peace-with-justice in the context of Israel and Palestine are very clear to acknowledge and work side by side with Israeli and American Jews -- I am thinking of Sami Awad and the organization he leads, Holy Land Trust. This coming September you will be encouraged to promote and show in your community a new documentary film, "Little Town of Bethlehem" which profiles Sami as a Palestinian Christian alongside a Palestinian Muslim and an Israeli Jew who are all committed to nonviolence. Unfortunately, there's a tendency for the religious left to simply be the flip side of that coin, listening only to the Palestinian side of the story. Yes, the Israeli gov't and army are doing unjust things, but they should not be made to represent every Israeli and every Jew, just as not every Palestinian should be judged by the actions of Hamas. There are Israelis working for peace, too, just like the non-violent protesters in the story.

If we really want to be peacemakers, we need to stop adding to the polarization and encourage those working for reconciliation at the grassroots level (musalaha.org, bridgebuilders.no, and seedsofpeace.org are good examples of this).

As an evangelical Christian I support several Jewish ministries. I have only heard one side of the story and assumed all this time that Israel would only and always be justified in what they do. The militant evangelical, who only interprets this in light of prophetic voice, or end time prophecies, may be willing to turn a blind eye to injustice for Palestinians in part because of what is taught from the pulpit.

In fact, Justice is an equal opportunity commodity. As fellow heirs with other believers, we are often called to hold members of the body accountable for their actions, in order to reproduce Jesus in the body. When I see half truths proclaimed, I am especially anxious because it is always the cause of Christ that is damaged. Palestinian Christians and peace seeking Jews have equal voice in my book. It still comes down to justice on either side of the fence and what would God expect from us.

Hey Gary - good to see your post. What else was accomplished should include this report from you. Peaceful or non-violent protests show that the will is their to confront the violent without using violent and gives the opportunity for others to get involved and spread the news of what is happening and it takes some courage not only to be there but to speak about it courageously as you have done. I was with Gary at the conference and it was great to have a forum at which people could meet and have a dialogue on what are difficult issues, and a platform for responding to the unquestioning support of one side - in this case Israel - tat is doing so much damage by supporting it in an uncompromising stance that relates everything to its own security, while at the same time recofnising that Israel is that way for a reason that goes well beyond the Middle East . Conference delegates and all peacemakers in the Holy Land are urged not to be one sided as this is just as damaging if uncritical support is given to palestinian causes or actions, perpetuating a cycle of violence.

Agreed - I wasn't "pointing my finger" at you, just at the tendency for Christians to get just as polarized on this issue as everyone else. I tend to argue both sides, depending on who I'm talking to... :)

I'll agree with this one point only. "This is street theater. Political drama."

This israeli soldier was certainly not proud to be there, but he knew for sure what would happen if the wall would be torn down. Sorry to say, but this street theater was a la good old Stalin. Mr Burge let himself become instrumentalized in a game where he apparently ignores what it is really about
