Who Will Listen to the Voices of Veterans Calling for Peace?

I watched helplessly as the snow fell on stubborn veterans and police officers at the White House gates. On December 16, Veterans for Peace (VFP) organized a brief rally followed by a nonviolent act of civil resistance at the White House demanding an end to the U.S. wars and occupations in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, and Yemen. VFP organizers expected this to be the largest veteran-led resistance since the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan began.

I often feel like a talking head advocating for issues that I am only familiar with, but have never experienced. However, bearing witness to former members of the armed services so vividly calling for an end to a war they participated in struck me as the purist form of activism. These men and women were asking the president to keep his promise. While President Obama had pledged during his campaign to "change the mindset that leads us to war," the deadline of troop withdrawal from Afghanistan is being rumored to be pushed back an additional 3 years, and the war looks destined to become the United States' longest war.

How many more voices will it take for President Obama, his administration, and military officials to understand that it is time to leave this war and appropriate non-militarized solutions? Demonstrators young and old called out chants and familiar songs of protest: "We shall overcome," "we shall not be moved," and a familiar John Lennon cry of "give peace a chance" rang through the freezing wind.

The war in Afghanistan is now entering its 10th year. As party politics continue to divide the debate over the country's budget deficit, our defense spending is often overlooked. In 2010, defense and security spending was estimated at around $715 billion (20 percent of the federal budget). The war is not fought only in Afghanistan, but is fought over a systemic battlefield -- which includes military actions in Afghanistan, Iraq, Yemen, Pakistan, and the management of almost 800 U.S. military bases throughout the world. This war is not sustainable.

I often jump to statistics when trying to rationalize an argument against injustice. However, as I watched these veterans strap themselves to the White House gates, I remembered the individual. The unnecessary sacrifice made by these men and women has been forgotten. Fiscally, war is impractical; emotionally, war is destructive; spiritually, war is immoral. God is our greatest advocate.

As the snow fell harder and I could no longer feel my feet, I prayed to God and petitioned for a transforming change to the global mindset that has led us to war and asked that we may know peace.

Actually, if you read the true story of how the wall came down rather than be misled by military propaganda, you will find that it came down as a result of a group of Christians on their knees praying.

I don't deny the fact that the Christian community in East Germany was a great force for the removal of the wall. I also believe that there were a number of factors that came together to cause the wall to come down . I know that this not an exhaustive list but here is what I see:

The east Germans praying and committing civil disobedience.

President Reagan's policies to out spend the USSR causing it to go broke.

Those in West Berlin who worked to tear down the wall.

The solidarity movement in neighboring Poland led by Leif Woolens and the POpe .

The unrest that was present in the other Iron Curtain Countries.

I do believe that President Reagan's statement " Me Gorbochov

I live for a large number of Christian Russians and Ukrainians have immigrated. They have come to America to exercise their ability to freely express their faith to God.

Thank you Hannah for this very well written letter. I am an Associate member of Veterans for Peace and I thank you for bringing this information out into the forefront.

I just talked on the phone with a Democratic Party fundraiser asking for funds. I said help stop this war. She defended Pres. Obama saying he is working hard to end the Afghan War. I told her that these are just stall techiques to assure continued war for the war machine. I told her we will not be deceived any longer and I will not give another dime to the Democrats until these wars are ended.

This to wyomingite: It was not war and military might that brought down the USSR and Communism. It was the people in those countries who finally stood up to tyranny and said "enough". The same thing needs to happen here in the US.

I have seen war up close and personal (Viet Nam) and it is ugly, but so is women being stoned often on trumped up charges, young girls having their noses cut off merely for wanting to learn how to read and write, women flogged by 'morality police' for some alleged infraction. As people of God how can we remain silent when it within our power to stop it. Some things are worth dying for.

@wyomingite: perhaps you read too much Tom Clancy. The USSR went bankrupt attempting to keep up with the US in the development of arms at the expense of its people. The US won that chapter of the Cold War, but at what cost? We now have an economy that can't function without war; and an economy that can't function with war.

I am very concerned about the plight of women in Afghanistan. I am a partial sponsor of an Afghan school girl whose family sent her to a boarding school so that she could get a full education. The Afghan organization that is behind this education program believes that the US should get its troops out of Afghanistan.

Afghan girls and women can be supported using limited, mostly non-violent means. Indigenous Afghan women's organizations have been doing this for decades. What the U.S. can do is give aid and comfort to these organizations if they truly want to help Afghan women and girls. Having drones kill Afghans doesn't accomplish this.

I too am a veteran and I appreciate this article and what these men are doing. Why isn't Obama fulfilling his pledge to bring our troops home? I'm ready for these two wars to end NOW! This is ridiculous. Let me guess... it's about money for the economy.
